Lindsay Phenix has run roughly 145 marathons and ultramarathons and is not done. She first heard about the Badwater 135 — 135 miles through Death Valley in July, from below sea level to the Whitney Portal — when her dad gave her a copy of Ultramarathon Man at age 14 and she thought it sounded like something people from another planet did. She has since run it twice, shaved five hours off her time between attempts, was featured in an Amazon Prime documentary about it, and her answer to whether she's found her limit yet is simply: no. This episode traces that arc from a 14-year-old running loops around a lake in suburban Houston with her dad at nine o'clock at night — both of them certain nobody had ever run 10 miles before — through a Keys 100 that came apart from mile seven and required her dad to cut the tops off her shoes at mile 60 while she called every friend she had looking for permission to quit, to Death Valley in July where the thermometer on the ground read 200 degrees and everyone in the last wave is running an eight-minute pace and throwing up simultaneously and there is simply no other option but to keep going. The full interview with Lindsay drops Wednesday in two parts on the Hiker Trash Radio feed.
